Resilience for Health Care Providers
Healthcare provider burnout takes a toll on the provider, their family and often the patients. Chaotic environments, time pressure, EMR, limited control of the pace of the day, and work/life balance issues all conspire to increase the daily stress burden to unhealthy levels. Because we entered the medical profession to help people maintain their health, their most precious resource, we often prioritize our patients’ health over ours. Other professions offer the pressure-release valve of “phoning it in” at work, but this, while not unheard of in healthcare, is a recipe for patient harm and therefore completely unacceptable to most healthcare providers. Unfortunately, administration is often as aware of this fact as they are of their bottom line, and based on both considerations, change for the better is often delayed or absent.
What you can control, however, is yourself. By adopting the proper mindset, you enable yourself to take the steps necessary in order to become who you need to be in order to survive and thrive in your chosen profession. Through challenging and supportive interactions, we will clarify your needs and how to maintain and advocate for them. Resilience generally flows from the personal transformation and tools are also gained to maintain your clarity, passion and renewed work-life balance. You will also be equipped with improved interpersonal communication abilities which will improve all relationships, allowing you to be a better leader at home and in the workplace.
